Upon its introduction in 2018, the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny quickly won over customers. With its boxy design reminiscent of a baby Mercedes-Benz G-Class, it handled rough surfaces as easily as smooth ones. Its distinctive Kinetic Yellow color makes it one of my personal favorites. Customers can also choose from a range of single colors like Celestial Blue Pearl Metallic (new), Arctic White Pearl, Silky Silver Metallic, Bluish Black Pearl, Granite Grey Metallic (new), and Jungle Green. Additionally, two-tone options include Chiffon Ivory Metallic, Kinetic Yellow, and Sizzling Red Metallic (new) with Pearlescent Bluish Black roofs.

Though the Jimny remains the same height and width as the three-door model, the five-door version boasts an extended wheelbase. This not only enhances stability but also provides more comfort for rear-seat passengers, as they are less likely to feel road imperfections.

Powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine delivering 75kW and 130Nm, the GL and GLX models are available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. An off-road system, featuring a transfer gearbox with 2H, 4H, and 4 Low range modes, ensures excellent off-road capabilities. When I took it from Johannesburg to Mokopane, I found it sensitive to crosswinds, but its handling remained reliable.

The five-door Jimny’s interior is as fun as it is functional, with an upright dashboard and conveniently located controls. Its commanding driving position makes navigating both off-road trails and city traffic a breeze. The GLX model further enhances the driving experience with a larger infotainment screen, upgrading from the 7-inch display on the GL to a 9-inch one. Both models offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with reverse camera functionality. The rear seats fold down to expand the load capacity from 211 liters to 332 liters, with an additional 113 liters of space available in the cabin.

“Safety remains a priority for Suzuki, and the five-door Jimny is no exception.”

Safety remains a priority for Suzuki, and the five-door Jimny is no exception. All models come equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS brakes, side impact beams in all doors, and three-point seatbelts for all four seats. Hill Descent Control, Hill Assist, and Brake Assist are also standard across the range.

In conclusion, the Jimny 5-Door may not be the most expansive 4×4 on the market, but it offers a unique and enjoyable experience that few others can match. While its low speed limits might save you from speeding tickets, it’s perfectly suited for both everyday driving and off-road adventures. Whether you’re camping, fishing, or just out for a drive, the Jimny adds fun to every journey.
