I recently had the pleasure of driving Volvo South Africa’s second-best-selling fully electric vehicle, the Volvo XC40 Recharge—until the arrival of the EX30, Volvo’s entry-level SUV, which has already sold 348 units since January of this year. Despite initial skepticism about electric cars in South Africa, current Volvo statistics show the brand is leading the electric vehicle segment. Now on my second electric car, I’ve come to appreciate how practical, luxurious, and convenient EVs are for my daily commute.

Design
In terms of design, I admire the minimalistic approach both inside and out. Owning a vehicle with such a sleek aesthetic would be a dream for anyone. Its boxy, edgy contours stand out on the streets, while the bulging bonnet, upright body-colored grille, and stylish 19-inch 5-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels give it a sporty edge.

Performance and Range
The XC40 Recharge is powered by a single electric motor on the front axle, generating 170 kW and 330 Nm of torque. Its low-mounted lithium-ion battery, paired with an 11 kW onboard charger, allows for an impressive claimed range of 423 kilometers on a single charge.

With the ability to charge at home, I found my daily routine simplified. Whether running errands, attending meetings, or just working, having a reliable at-home charging option meant I rarely needed to rely on public charging stations. On the occasions I did use public chargers in Sandton and Rosebank, I noticed they were slower compared to the Rubicon fast charger in Booysens. I quickly learned to prioritize fast-charging stations when my schedule allowed. Charging to 80% didn’t take long at all.

Volvo also provides an 11 kW home charger with the purchase of an XC40 Recharge, addressing potential concerns about charging infrastructure. While South Africa’s infrastructure for EVs isn’t perfect, living with an electric vehicle is more feasible than many might think.

“While it may lack the flashy appeal of some competitors, Volvo has always prioritized substance over style, and it shows in this model.”

Interior and Comfort
The interior of the XC40 Recharge features high-quality materials that feel great to the touch. It’s spacious and thoughtfully designed, making it ideal for weekend adventures or trips to the mall. While it may lack the flashy appeal of some competitors, Volvo has always prioritized substance over style, and it shows in this model.

Technology
Equipped with Google Assistant, Maps, and the Play Store, the XC40 Recharge’s infotainment system is as intuitive as using a smartphone. Navigating, finding nearby charging stations, or even streaming your favorite shows is effortless. It’s like having a tablet seamlessly integrated into your car.

C40 vs. XC40

  • The C40 is more expensive, is the first Volvo to be produced without leather, and comes with a sunroof.
  • Both models share identical wheelbases and body widths, but the C40 has a slightly lower body height, giving it a sleeker profile.
  • The C40 includes a Harman Kardon sound system as standard, while the XC40 offers it as an option.
  • Both vehicles have the same cutting-edge tech features, such as Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store.

Both models offer the same charging times and towing capacity. Most buyers are likely to choose between RWD and AWD based on their needs and the small price difference.

If given the choice, I’d pick the C40. It doesn’t just meet the bar—it sets it higher.

Final Thoughts
Overall, the Volvo XC40 Recharge stands out among the growing pool of electric vehicles. It delivers a satisfying driving experience without compromising performance or ethical considerations. It’s an EV that lets you enjoy the thrill of the drive while reducing your environmental footprint.

With its Android-based infotainment system, the XC40 Recharge feels more like a smart companion than just a car. While opinions on EVs will always vary, for me, the XC40 Recharge is a clear winner. I like it.
