If you’re reading this review of the sleek, smart, and all-electric Volvo C40 for the first time, you might be wondering about the title. The rumors are true—I had the pleasure of experiencing this luxurious all-electric SUV twice. I test-drove it last year and was impressed, but this year, Volvo increased the charging limit from 90% to 100%, which completely changed my experience.
The C40 is an eye-catching SUV with a coupe-inspired design that looks flawless from any angle. The stunning Fjord Blue paint, panoramic sunroof, and pixel headlamps give it a distinctive, high-end aesthetic. It sits on 20-inch, 5-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels, further enhancing its elite appeal.
Inside, the C40 redefines luxury and simplicity. The craftsmanship is phenomenal, with premium Charcoal Connect suede textile and Microtech materials, creating a refined and minimalist interior. Comfort is unmatched, seamlessly blending with state-of-the-art technology.
Step inside, and you’ll instantly recognize Volvo’s attention to detail. Standard features include keyless entry with remote tag, a power-operated tailgate, Volvo On Call, a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, a 360-degree camera, and stunning backlit topography décor inlays.
Beneath its sleek design, the C40 is powered by dual electric motors paired with a high-voltage battery and a one-speed electric gearbox. It delivers 300kW and 660Nm of torque, ensuring smooth power delivery to all four wheels.
I decided to take the C40 on another road trip to Limpopo, eager to see if I could comfortably arrive with the air conditioning on while enjoying my favourite songs through its incredible Harman Kardon sound system. The first time I drove it, I was skeptical—I avoided using the air conditioning or playing music, fearing what would happen if the battery reached 0%. This time, however, the 480km range after a full charge gave me the confidence to explore the open road without worrying about charging points. Cruising at 120km/h on the freeway, I arrived with 40% battery remaining, which I found impressive. The car responded quickly and handled beautifully.
As part of Volvo’s renowned safety suite, the C40 includes Intellisafe Assist, featuring pedestrian, cyclist, and large animal detection, along with front and rear collision warnings with full auto-braking. Lane-keeping aids and road sign recognition further enhance its safety profile.
The C40 boasts a clean, modern design with a stylish coupe-like body. Performance is effortless, acceleration is smooth, and safety features are top-tier. However, visibility through the rear windshield was somewhat limited—perhaps I didn’t adjust my seat correctly. Boot space isn’t the most generous, but it’s adequate.
Overall, this is an excellent vehicle. It drives smoothly, is quick, and remains whisper-quiet on the road. I highly recommend it!
