I had the chance to spend another week exploring one of Volkswagen’s awesome crossover SUV, the Taigo 1.0 TSI R-Line! The model I had the pleasure of trying out the beautiful Smoky Grey Metallic finish, and it’s available at a standard price of R537,100. Of course, there is a wide range of colours available to cater to various preferences for everyone. In addition, Volkswagen also has two entry-level versions called the Taigo Life and Taigo Style, with prices starting from R475,000 for the standard models.

“Although performance may not be its strongest point, it still has a lot to offer!”

The Taigo is powered by a three-cylinder engine that delivers a friendly 85kW of power and 200Nm of torque. However, you might notice that this setup feels a bit sluggish, especially when driving longer trips at higher speeds. The Taigo is great when it comes to practicality and aesthetics, even more so when compared to its sibling, the T-Cross. Although performance may not be its strongest point, it still has a lot to offer! The coupe design of the car, along with the R-Line trim enhancements, definitely makes it look even more attractive. However, the boot capacity of 440 litres falls just a little bit short compared to the T-Cross and T-Roc. However, it does a great job of holding its own against similar products from other companies.

VW Taigo R-Line: Interior

“As a trusted brand in South Africa, Volkswagen understands that consumers might find it challenging to choose between affordability and brand loyalty.”

VW Taigo R-Line: Exterior

The crossover SUV market in South Africa is growing rapidly, giving consumers a wide range of options to choose from. I really appreciate Volkswagen’s clever strategy of offering a wide range of options in this market. As a trusted brand in South Africa, Volkswagen understands that consumers might find it challenging to choose between affordability and brand loyalty. This is especially true with the rise of strong competition from Asian manufacturers in the crossover SUV market.

The interior of the car has a similar look to the Polo, but it’s made even more appealing with the attractive R-Line finishes on the seats. During my week-long experience, I didn’t come across any major drawbacks with the Taigo. For me however, I would definitely prefer T-Roc over both the T-Cross and the Taigo simply from a looks perspective and the way it responds to my foot. When it comes to making a choice, it’s all about personal taste and what you need. With so many options available, there’s something for everyone!
